Concurrent with the Venice Biennial, the British born, New York based artist Liam Gillick, who will represent Germany at this year’s Venice Biennial as the first non-native German artist ever, created an edition in the form of an object intended to be used within the domestic and office environment, entitled „Frankfurt Kitchen Paper Weight“, 2009. The object consists of four sections of square aluminum tubing, attached to each other via one screw per side and which together form a three dimensional square. The individual sections of aluminum are powder coated yellow, orange, purple and green. By hinting at the possible use as a weight to secure letters, documents, newspapers, etc, the object links the close relationship between immaterial labor, composition, and the, ever since the advent of Minimal Art emancipated from the artist hand, form of contemporary artistic production. Gillick’s practice encompasses installations, minimalist objects, text based works, wall paintings, essays, catalogs and books, videos, soundtracks, interviews and curotorial projects within the sphere of the group of artists loosely associated with relational aesthetics. His formal vocabulary includes art historical references to movements of the Avantgarde, Minimalism, Conceptual Art and the history of modern design as well as economic and socio-political discourses.
For „Texte zur Kunst“ Liam Gillick has conceived an object made of powder-coated aluminium entitled “Frankfurt Kitchen Paper Weight“, 2009. The object measures 15 x 15 x 2 x 2 cm and comes in an edition of 120 + 20 APs. Each work is accompanied by a numbered and signed certificate.
