Rollo is a royal poodle, and his hair is an authentic trace of his being, a real living creature, but it is also a material used in making this miniature effigy of his body. The playful take on the both comedic and dramatic abjectness of bodily existence, one might say, is programmatic in Raphaela Vogel’s oeuvre. Virtually incorporating her dog’s pelage into his likeness, the work gestures toward the video operas Vogel stages, most recently at Kunsthaus Bregenz, Haus der Kunst, Munich, and Berlinische Galerie: sculptural installation environments in which skin and hair figure prominently. This edition, too, rubs the inevitable admixture of magic in any representation of living beings in the viewer’s and user’s face. But not to worry, there’s no kernel to this brute.
