Richard Prince came to popularity foremost with his photographical adaptations of commercial motifs from advertising, like “Cowboys” or the series of “Girlfriends”. His different understanding of Appropriation is based on more personal preferences and fetishes he opposed against the conceptual strictness of Appropriation Art. Richard Prince derives personal property from common repertoire and by this process questions collective and subjective identities which are influenced by commercial and conventional surfaces. The motif “Untitled (Woman With Hat)” is derived from a work of the early eighties.
