Carsten Nicolai, "master a and master b" (2006)

Carsten Nicolai

master a and master b (2006)

The Berlin based artist Carsten Nicolai was born in Chemnitz 1965 and now is known as one of the leading figures of a new generation of artists, who have dedicated themselves to the combination of different visual and auditive media and discussions: from the field of fine art, he takes painting, sculpture, installations, from the field of music he takes minimal electronic sounds, and his interest in studies about the perception of sound and light stems from elements of natural science. His oversized sound installations refer to the relation of sound and spatial structure and are in high esteem for their reduced aesthetics. In this way, the artist has also conceptualized a new understanding of sculpture as well as a new form of perception: this kind of sculpture will no longer be be perceived visually but through an invovement of all senses.
