Sophie von Hellermann/Josh Smith, "Fish-Face" (2005)

Sophie von Hellermann / Josh Smith

Fish-Face (2005)

We were able to win Sophie von Hellermann and Josh Smith as second artists for our series, who together designed a monotype für us. Sophie von Hellermann, who was born in Munich and currently lives in London, became known as a member of the artists collective “hobbypopMUSEUM”, founded in Düsseldorf in 1998, after she attended the class of Dieter Krieg at Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie. The group extended its activities very soon towards other cities than Düsseldorf, especially towards London, where the group kept reinventing themselves through painting and performative events and by commissioning themselves with “themes”. For a long time and in a light-hearted way, von Hellermann has worked on a parallel level next to the literary model of the Bildungsroman. In every image one can see that not only the glamour of iconography but the brilliance of an idea is relevant; not the technical completion, but the closeness to an intelligence of the image, achieved in the work process. After a solo exhibition at Greene Naftali Gallery in New York, Sophie von Hellermann attended the group show “Les Nouveaux Commenditaires” at Musée de Nancy. Next spring her works will be shown at Neuer Aachener Kunstverein. The works of Josh Smith, who was born 1976 in Okinawa and now is living in New York, can be called “bookish”. Not only due to his education within the craft of print, but also because of the collage structures of his poster-like images, often arranged in collections, oscillating between ornamentality and writtenness, between “scattering” and fragile compositions of wallpapers. Smith recently had exhibitions at Reena Spauling and at Greene Naftali in New York, as well as Fortescue Avenue London. The papers for our edition, produced in a two coloured replica method, are unique reminiscences to motives of Renaissance book illustration: they each consist of the combination or overlayering of a head and a fish.

For Texte zur Kunst, Sophie von Hellermann and Josh Smith developed a series of different monotypes, entitled “Fish-Face” (2005). This issue’s “Young Edition” measures 35 x 43 cm. Edition: 60 + 10 A.P. It is signed and numbered and costs 245,- € plus shipping.
