Gerhard Richter
40000 (2008)
Since 1966 Richter worked on series of “colour charts” where he reduced compositional decisions programmatically to its minimum in limiting it to the presentation of a color repertoire chosen at random. The title of this edition refers to the number of black, white and grey squares contained in the work. The arrangement of the elements are based on a digital lottery with beforehand defined parameters. This process activates an aesthetical tension between coincidence and planning, calculated composition and creative subjectivity.
