New York-based artist Mary Heilmann is one of the most renowned painters of her generation. With regard to the formal vocabulary of geometric abstraction and colour field painting, Heilmann since the 1970s has developed a unique visual language, in which she fuses non-figurative elements with pop-cultural codes. Her colourful compositions often depart from a geometric pattern, yet distort its basic abstract forms, and display blobs and trops of paint and gestural marks. Heilmann’s works are permeated by autobiographical aspects that are evoked by associative titles such as “Save the Last Dance for Me!” (1979). Her titles, however, don’t only relate to personal experiences, but also refer to everyday events and film or song titles. Her œuvre isn’t limited to the medium of painting alone, but also includes furniture and ceramic sculptures. For “Texte zur Kunst”, Mary Heilmann has produced a print that is typical for the visual language she has developed in her practice. The backdrop is formed by a geometric grid with alternating black and white surfaces whose rigidity is slighted distorted in terms of perspective by way of brushstroke traces and dissolved through white paint and blobs. From the upper side of the images to its centre the geometric formation is superimposed by black paint reminiscent of gestures of Abstract Expressionism. Here also the title serves a narrative surplus. “It’s raining today”, 2009, evokes associations with rain slowly trickling down a window.
