New York based artist Zoe Leonard participated at documenta 12 with her work “Analogue” (1998-2007), a series of documentation photographs showing arrangements of consumer items in shop windows or the lettering on facades of shops, whose original meaning does not match anymore with the current graphical style and the placement. The photographs were shot during the past twenty years in the artist’s neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. Especially in shopping windows and their presented goods the changes in a specific area and during a certain time manifest themselves clearly. But ostensible the artistic practice of Zoe Leonard is not dedicated to social analysis even though her motives offer reason for such an interpretation. In fact, the series is more affected by a subjective perspective that stages the objects within the frame of a large-format-camera. Therefore the arrangements of the objects seem to be conceived installations. “Untitled, East Jerusalem” (1999/2010) is a photograph from her recent cycle of “found still lifes” which is dedicated to the city centre of Jerusalem. Within the picture the artist has chosen for Texte zur Kunst a social critical point of view seems to be of interest in many layers now: Bootlegged designer bags, which are presented in serial order on an old walling, replace the lettering in front of the shop and leave their own place of production and their cultural belonging vaguely in contrast to the specific building. The bags could be presented everywhere as a product of tourism and could therefore be at home in the circulation of the global black market. This edition of Zoe Leonard, however, is unique!
