There isn’t much to be added to the reputation of artist Jonathan Meese, born in Tokyo in 1970. Hardly anyone today so casually performs the role of the „major artist“. Over the course of the last decade, Meese has amassed a huge oeuvre consisting of installations, performance, collages, paintings, bronze sculptures, videos, film props and stage sets. His works are networks of references to the history of German literature and philosophy, fictitious ur myths and real heroic epics, all fused into a idiosyncratic private mythology. At the centre of this seemingly obsessive artistic production, it is Meese himself who figures prominently: be in self-portraits in case of his collages, paintings and drawings, be it in persona in his performance actions and videos.
